Immersion

Immersion or Dip Coating is a process in which the substrate is dipped into a tank of the coating reservoir, which is normally of a low viscosity to enable the coating to run back into the bath as the substrate emerges.

Once the excess coating has drained, the substrate material is further dried using one of a variety of techniques, often baking.

It’s effective for thicker coatings and full coverage, including edges and internal surfaces.

Materials

PTFE → Can be used in multi-layer systems (often with a primer) in immersion-style processes to build up thickness where required. Maintains low friction and chemical resistance.

PFA → Suitable for immersion coating where thicker, pinhole-free, high-purity coatings are needed. Melt-processable nature allows for more uniform film build compared to PTFE.

ETFE → Commonly applied via fluidised bed immersion. Produces tough, impact-resistant coatings with excellent chemical resistance and good coverage on complex parts.

ECTFE → Highly suited to immersion coating for thick, highly corrosion-resistant linings in aggressive chemical environments. Excellent for valves, pumps, and vessels.

Nylon (PA) → Frequently used in fluidised bed coating. Provides thick, tough, wear-resistant coatings with good adhesion and impact resistance for functional components.
